Accelerated stress testing is important for many test engineers in R&D. However, accelerated stress tests are not appropriate for every situation and knowing when to set one up is critical to successful validation. Many factors contribute to the feasibility of an accelerated stress test, including knowledge of the expected failure mode, validation timing, test sample cost/availability, resource cost, etc. This presentation leverages a case study involving validation of a purchased wheel axle assembly in an outdoor sweeping machine application. The case study demonstrates how an accelerated test was appropriate, how it was implemented, and the type of knowledge gained. This successful case study exhibits accelerated stress testing reducing validation time, providing confidence in design improvements, and how a partnership between an OEM and supplier was critical to the overall success of validation.
